(S)-Ethyl-2-tert-butyloxycarbonylamino-3-(4-methanesulfonylaminophenyl)propionate (3.00 g, 7.76 mmol) was dissolved in a solution of 4 N HCl in dioxane (10 mL). The bright orange solution was allowed to stir at room temperature overnight. The solvent was then evaporated and the residue azeotroped with toluene, furnishing the product as a bright peach solid (2.5 g, 100%).
