Procedure
Combine methyl 2-methoxy-5-(5-methylthio-1H-tetrazol-1-yl)benzoate (0.51 g, 1.81 mmol) and lithium hydroxide (0.065 g, 2.71 mmol) and tetrahydrofuran/water (5 mL/5 mL). Heat to reflux. After 1 hour, cool to ambient temperature, separate the layers, and extract the organic layer 2 times with 1 M aqueous sodium hydroxide solution. Combine the aqueous layers and extract with diethyl ether. Acidify the aqueous layer using aqueous 1 M hydrochloric acid solution to give the title compound.
