Procedure

Following the procedure of Example 53, Step 4 using the benzil from Step 3 (2.15 g 8.2 mmol) and sodium methylsulfinate (1.05 g, 10 mmol) in dimethylformamide (20 ml), there was obtained 1 g (50%) of the desired sulfone: mp 146-147° C., after recrystallization from ethyl acetate and hexane. Anal. Calc'd. for C16H13FO4S (MW 320.34): C, 59.99; H, 4.09; S, 10.01. Found: C, 59.68; H, 4.17; S, 10.13.
