Procedure

At 0°-5° C. a solution of 4 g AlCl3 in 50 ml nitromethane is added to a mixture of 6 g 1-isopropyl-2,3,3,5-tetramethyl indan (obtained according to example I or II) and 25 g propionyl chloride. Then the reaction mixture is stirred at room temperature during one hour and poured out into ice and extracted three times with ether. The solution in ether is washed neutral, dried and evaporated. The residue is distilled under diminished pressure to obtain 6-propionyl-1-isopropyl-2,3,3,5-tetramethyl indan in a yield of 80%. B.p. 145° C./1 mm Hg.
