A mixture of 2.55 g (0.005 mole) of [4-acetyl-3-[2-[2-[2-(2-bromoethoxy)ethoxy]ethoxy]ethoxy]-2-propylphenoxy]acetic acid ethyl ester, 0.97 g (0.005 mole) of 1-(2,4-dihydroxy-3-propylphenyl)ethanone and 1.00 g (0.0062 mole) of anhydrous potassium carbonate in 60 ml of anhydrous acetone was stirred at reflux for 15 hours. An additional 0.5 g of potassium carbonate was added and reflux was continued for 15 hours. The solvent was removed in vacuo and the residue was chromatographed on 300 g of silica gel. Elution with 30% ethyl acetate-toluene gave 1.25 g (40% yield) of [4-acetyl-3-[2-[2-[2-[2-(4-acetyl-3-hydroxy-2-propylphenoxy)ethoxy]ethoxy]ethoxy]ethoxy]-2-propylphenoxy]acetic acid ethyl ester as an oil.
