Procedure

To 4-chloro-6-methyl-2-(6-o-tolyl-2-pyridinyl)pyrimidine (2 g) was added sodium methoxide prepared from methanol (10 ml) and metallic sodium (0.19 g). After the mixture was left to stand at room temperature for 30 minutes, water (30 ml) and chloroform (100 ml) was added thereto, and then extracted. After the extract was dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, it was concentrated under reduced pressure to obtain 4-methoxy-6-methyl-2-(6-o-tolyl-2-pyridinyl)pyrimidine (1.9 g, yield 96%).
