Procedure
8.0 g (0.03 mol) of ethyl 1-(2-isopropenyl-6-methylphenyl)imidazole-5-carboxylate (see Example 128) are heated for 2 hours at 80° C. with 100 ml of 2N sodium hydroxide solution. The mixture is cooled and acidified to pH 3 with concentrated hydrochloric acid, and the precipitate is filtered off under suction. 5.2 g (72% of theory) of 1(2-isopropenyl-6-methylphenyl)imidazole-5-carboxylic acid, a colorless solid of melting point 204° C. (decomposition), are obtained.
