Procedure

A mixture of 10 g of 2-methylthioethyl 2-(2-aminothiazol-4-yl)-2(Z)-hydroxyiminoacetate, 10 g of tertbutyl 2-bromobutyrate and 7 g of anhydrous potassium carbonate in 250 ml of acetone is kept at 60°-70° C. for 20 hours with stirring. Insolubles are filtered off and the filtrate is concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue is dissolved in ethyl acetate, and the solution is washed with water, then with saturated aqueous sodium chloride and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The solvent is then evaporated off to give the above-identified compound as a viscous liquid, which, upon standing, solidifies. Yield: 12.6 g.
