Procedure

4-Hydroxy-1-indanone (5.0 g, 33.7 mmol) was dissolved in acetone (170 mL) and then potassium carbonate (9.0 g, 138.21 mmol) and Mel (9.6 g, 67.5 mmol) were added. The resulting suspension was heated to 50° C. and stirred for 3 days at which time the reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was partitioned between EtOAc and water. The organic phase was separated and the aqueous phase was extracted with EtOAc. The combined organic layers were dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure to give the title compound (5.4 g, 98%) as a yellow solid. GC-MS m/z [M+H]+ 163.
