To a solution of 4-(4-ethyl-1,3-thiazol-2-yl)-2-propylphenol (0.24 g, 0.97 mmol) (Example 33) in DMF (2 mL, containing 1% v/v of water) was added 1,2-dibromoethane (1.09 g, 5.82 mmol), and the mixture was stirred at rt for 12 h. The reaction mixture was filtered, and the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure. The crude residue was suspended in EtOAc, filtered through a small plug of silica, and the filtrate was concentrated. The crude material was used in the next step without further purification. 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3): δ 7.79-7.68 (m, 2H), 6.88-6.78 (m, 2H), 4.34 (t, 2H), 3.69 (t, 2H), 2.95-2.82 (m, 2H), 2.72-2.60 (m, 2H), 1.80-1.64 (m, 2H), 1.36 (t, 3H), 1.02 (t, 3H).
