Procedure

A solution of 4-nitro-3-[(triisopropylsilyl)oxy]benzaldehyde O-methyloxime (0.70 g, 2.0 mmol) in ethanol (13 mL) and tetrahydrofuran (3 mL) is degassed with solid carbon dioxide, then charged with 5% palladium on carbon (100 mg) and 88% formic acid (0.8 mL). The mixture is stirred under 1 atm hydrogen gas overnight. The mixture is then filtered through a pad of diatomaceous earth, and the filtrate is concentrated under reduced pressure to give {4-(aminomethyl)-2-[(triisopropylsilyl)oxy]phenyl}amine as its diformic acid salt. This material is used in the subsequent step without further purification.
