A mixture of 9,10-dimethoxy-2-oxo-1,3,4,6,7,11b-hexahydro-2H-pyrido[2,1-a]isoquinoline-3-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (Helv. Chim. Acta 1958, 41, 119; 4.00 g, 12.0 mmol) and ammonium acetate (13.9 g, 180 mmol) in methanol was stirred 5 h at room temperature. After evaporation of the solvent the residue was partitioned between dichloromethane and 1 M aq. sodium hydroxide solution. The organic layer was dried (MgSO4), and triturated with heptane to afford the title compound (3.71 g, 93%). Off-white solid, MS (ISP) 333.2 (M+H)+.
