Procedure
To a solution of 48 (240 mg, 0.4 mmol) in methanol (10 mL) was added sodium methoxide (0.5 N in methanol, 2 mL). After 10 min the mixture was diluted with 1N HCl (2 mL) and the product was extracted into ethyl acetate (50 mL), washed with water (50 mL), brine (50 mL), dried (MgSO4), filtered and concentrated in vacuo. The crude material was purified by flash chromatography using hexanes:ethyl acetate (3:2) to yield 49(122 mg, 62%) as a white foam. 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-d6): δ 12.10 (br s, 1H), 7.71 (s, 1H), 7.28 (d, J=8.8 Hz, 2H), 7.18 (d, J=8.8 Hz, 2H), 7.03 (d, J=8.8 Hz, 2H), 6.97 (d, J=8.8 Hz, 2H), 6.92 (s, 1H), 6.68 (s, 2H), 4.91 (dd, J=8.8 and 4.4 Hz, 1H), 3.73 (s, 3H), 3.37 (dd, J=14.0 and 4.4 Hz, 1H), 3.12 (dd, J=14.0 and 8.8 Hz, 1H), 2.12 (s, 6H).
