To a solution of 56 (1.20 g, 6.0 mmol) and 4-fluorobenzaldehyde (745 mg, 6.0 mmol) in DMF (25 mL) was added cesium carbonate (3.90 g, 12.0 mmol). After stirring for 1 h at 100° C., the product was partitioned between ethyl acetate (100 mL) and water (100 mL). The organic layer was washed with water (100 mL), brine (100 mL), dried (MgSO4), filtered and concentrated in vacuo. The crude product was dissolved in dichloromethane and adsorbed onto silica gel and purified by flash chromatography using hexanes-ethyl acetate (6:1) to yield 57 (1.23 g, 67%) as a white solid after solvent removal.
