Diisobutylaluminum hydride (1 M solution in THF, 0.40 mL, 0.40 mmol) was added dropwise to a solution of 5-tert-butyl-pyridine-2-carboxylic acid [2-(3,4-dichloro-phenyl)-ethyl]-amide (195 mg, 0.555 mmol) in THF (2 mL) at 0° C., then after 15 min, the reaction was stopped by careful addition of water. The reaction mixture was partitioned between ethyl acetate and 1 M aq. potassium sodium tartrate solution, the organic layer was washed with brine, dried (MgSO4), and concentrated. Chromatography (SiO2, heptane/ethyl acetate 1:1, then dichloromethane/methanol 9:1) afforded (5-tert-butyl-pyridin-2-ylmethyl)-[2-(3,4-dichloro-phenyl)-ethyl]-amine (128 mg, 68%). Yellow oil, MS (ISP): 337.3 (M+H)+.
