Procedure
Sodium hydroxide (50% in water, 10 mL) was added to a stirring solution of [3-(4-cyano-3-trifluoromethyl-phenoxy)-4,4-dimethyl-2-oxo-pyrrolidin-1-yl]-acetic acid ethyl ester (3) (16.8 mmoles) in ethanol (50 mL) and water (40 mL). The reaction was stirred at ambient temperature overnight. The pH of reaction mixture was adjusted to 2.0 by adding hydrochloric acid (37% in water). The reaction mixture was concentrated in vacuo to remove the ethanol. The desired product (3′) that precipitated from the residue was filtered and dried in a vacuum oven overnight.
