Procedure
To a solution of 10,11-dihydro-5H-pyrrolo[2,1-c][1,4]benzodiazepine (19.23 g, 0.104 mol) and N,N-diisopropylethylamine (27.3 mL, 0.157 mol) in dichloromethane (500 mL) was added 9-fluorenylmethyl chloroformate (27 g, 0.104 mol). The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature under nitrogen for 4 hours, and then washed with 1 M hydrochloric acid (3×300 mL), water (300 mL) and brine (300 mL), dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and concentrated in vacuo to give a pale yellow solid. The solid was slurried in dichloromethane (75 mL), the slurry was diluted with diethyl ether (300 mL) and the resulting white suspension stirred overnight. Filtration afforded the title compound (34.64 g, 82%) as a white solid, m.p. 141-142° C.
