A mixture of 56 mmol (8.85 g) p-methylthiobenzoic acid, 40 ml benzene and 112 mmol (7.4 ml) thionyl chloride is boiled under reflux for 24 hours. The benzene and excess thionyl chloride are removed under vacuum to give p-methylthiobenzoyl chloride mp 48-52 in 80% yield.
