A solution of 2.5 parts of intermediate 67, namely N-[2-(dimethoxymethyl)-4-[(1H-imidazol-1-yl)phenylmethyl]phenyl]acetamide, 52.5 parts of acetic acid and 10 parts of water was stirred for 1/2 hour at reflux temperature. The reaction mixture was evaporated and the residue was co-evaporated with methylbenzene, yielding 2.2 parts (100%) of N-[2-formyl-4-[(1H-imidazol-1-yl)phenylmethyl]phenyl]acetamide (interm. 68).
