Procedure

A mixture of pentane-2,4-dione (5.0 g), ethyl 7-bromoheptanoate (11.1 g), potassium carbonate (13.8 g), and cesium carbonate (1.63 g) in a mixture of acetonitrile (150 ml) and dimethylsulfoxide (30 ml) was stirred at 20° C. overnight, then pentane-2,4-dione (5 g) was added. After stirring at 20° C. overnight, the mixture was partitioned between ethyl acetate and 0.5N hydrochloric acid. The organic layer was separated, washed with water and brine, dried over magnesium sulfate, and evaporated. The residue was chromatographed on silica gel eluting with a mixture of ethyl acetate and hexane (1:5) to give ethyl 8-acetyl-9-oxodecanoate (55 g) as an oil.
