Ethyl bromoacetate (4.14 g; 24.8 mmol) was treated with (R)α-methylbenzylamine (3 g, 24.8 mmol) and ethyldiisopropylamine (3.2 g; 24.8 mmol) in toluene (100 mL). After heating at reflux for 18 hours, the mixture was cooled to room temperature and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by flash chromatography (SiO2, 20% ethyl acetate/pentane) to provide the title compound (3.2 g, 63% yield). MS (DCI/NH3) m/z 208 (M+H)+.
