Procedure
A suspension of hydroxylamine hydrochloride (31.62 g; 45.5 mmol) in MeOH (350 ml) was treated with sodium methoxide (24.58 g; 45.5 mmol) slowly, in small portions. After stirring for 20 minutes, a solution of 4-(dimethoxymethyl)benzonitrile (67 g; 37.9 mmol) in MeOH (100 ml) was added and the mixture heated to reflux. After 12 hr, it was concentrated and partitioned between ethyl acetate and water. The organic phase was washed with water and brine, dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated to afford 4-(dimethoxymethyl)-N′-hydroxybenzenecarboximidamide (74.2 g) which was used in the next step without further purification. MS: m/z 211 (M+1).
