Procedure
A mixture of 1.0 g of 5-(2-pyridinyl)thiophene-2-carboxylic acid and 5 ml of thionyl chloride is refluxed for 2.5 hours. The mixture is concentrated to dryness under vacuum. Toluene is added (2 times) and the solvent removed under vacuum to give the product as an off-white solid.
