Procedure

A mixture of 1-cyclopentyl-3-ethyl-6-(methylsulfonyloxymethyl)pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidin-4-one (1.8 g, 15.3 mmol), 1-(methylcarbonyl)imidazole (640 mg, 5.8 mmol) and CH3CN (36 mL) was heated at reflux for 6 hours. The solvent was stripped, ice water and saturated NaHCO3 were added and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate, dried over MgSO4, filtered and stripped. The product was combined with that from a similar experimental run and the mixture was recrystallized from ethyl acetate. The product was then treated with 2N HCl, extracted with ethyl acetate and the aqueous layer was neutralized with NaHCO3, extracted with ethyl acetate, dried over MgSO4, filtered and stripped. The residue was recrystallized from ethyl acetate to afford 0.54 g of 1-cyclopentyl-3-ethyl-6-(1-imidazolylmethyl)pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidin-4-one, m.p. 252°-253° C.
