Procedure
Methyl 3-bromo-4-methylbenzoate (6.56 g, 28.64 mmol), carbon tetrachloride (100 mL), NBS (6.07 g, 34.10 mmol) and AIBN (150 mg, 0.91 mmol) were heated at reflux for 18 h. The reaction mixture was cooled and diluted with DCM (200 mL) and water (100 ml) and washed with 5% NaHCO3 saturated solution (50 mL), dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure (rotary evaporator) affording an oily residue.
