Procedure

A solution of (±)-2′-oxo-1,1′,2′,3-tetrahydrospiro[indene-2,3′-indole]-5-carboxylic acid from Step B (65.0 mg, 0.233 mmol), diphenylphosphoryl azide (0.060 mL, 0.279 mmol), and triethylamine (0.039 mL, 0.279 mmol) in t-BuOH (5 mL) was heated to reflux for 3 h. The reaction mixture was concentrated in vacuo. The crude product was purified by silica gel chromatography, eluting with a gradient of hexane:EtOAc—100:0 to 50:50, to give the title compound. MS: m/z=295 (M-C4H7).
