Procedure

To a solution of 200 mg of 2-(2-cyclopropyl)-6-nitro-3-oxo-4H-benz[1,4]oxazine (1 g) in EtOH/water (20 mL; 2:1 v/v) was added 5 eq of iron and 5 eq of ammonium chloride and the reaction was heated at 90° C. for 4 h. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature, diluted with dichloromethane and filtered. The layers were separated, the aqueous was extracted once with dichloromethane, the combined organics layers were dried over magnesium sulfate, the solution filtered and the filtrate evaporated in vacuo to give the desired product 6-amino-2-(2-cyclopropyl)-3-oxo-4H-benz[1,4]. MS (m/e): 191 (MH+).
