Procedure
To a stirred solution of 4-aminobutyraldehyde diethyl acetal 1a (89.3 mmol) in CH3CN (100 mL) was added N-carbethoxyphthalimide (93.8 mmol). Once the reaction was complete, the acetonitrile was removed under reduced pressure and the aqueous phase extracted with EtOAc (×3). The organic phase were combined, then washed with water (×4), saturated brine (×3), then dried (Na2SO4), filtered, and evaporated under reduced pressure to give the title compound 1b, which crystallized on standing.
