Trifluoroacetic acid (2 mL) was added to a stirred solution of 1′-(tert-butyoxycarbonyl)spiro[indene-1,4′-piperidine]-3-carboxylic acid (C4) (0.25 g, 0.76 mmol) in dichloromethane (5 mL) and the solution was stirred at room temperature for 1 h. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure and dried under high vacuum for 18 h to provide spiro[indene-1,4′piperidine]-3-carboxylate (D1) as an oil (0.26 g, quantitative, TFA salt). LC/MS (10-90% over 3 min with 0.9% FA) m/z 230.3 (M+1), Rt 1.3 minutes. 1HNMR (500 MHz, DMSO-d6): 12.91 (brs, 1H), 7.95 (s, 1H), 7.88 (d, 1H), 7.35 (m, 3H), 3.31-3.43 (m, 4H), 2.27 (m, 2H), 1.42 (m,2H).
