A solution comprising 18.3 g (155.1 mmol) of 2-propyl-1,3-propanediol, 30.0 g (147.7 mmol) of 3-(3,5-dichlorophenyl)-propionaldehyde, 1.5 g of p-toluenesulfonic acid, and 300 ml of toluene was heated to reflux while taking out the distilled water for 3 hours. After termination of the reaction, the organic layer was washed with a diluted aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution once and water thrice, and then dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The solvent was distilled off under a reduced pressure and the residue was subjected to silica gel column chromatography (eluent: toluene) to obtain 32.3 g of a crude trans-2-(2-(3,5-dichlorophenyl)ethyl)-5-propyl-1,3-dioxane. (Yield: 72.1%)
