To 2.00 g of ethyl 1-benzyl-1,2-dihydro-2-oxoquinoxaline-3-carboxylate were added 10 ml of ethanol and 20 ml of 10% aqueous sodium hydroxide solution, followed by stirring at room temperature for an hour. To the reaction solution was added dropwise 3 N hydrochloric acid to make acidic (pH=3.0), and the precipitated crystals were collected by filtration and washed with water and diethyl ether to give 1.73 g of 1-benzyl-1,2-dihydro-2-oxoquinoxaline-3-carboxylic acid.
