Methyl 6,8-dihydroxyoctanoate (0.15 g, 0.80 mmol; containing about 10% of the 6,7-isomer) was dissolved in 3 mL of methanol and 1.00 M sodium hydroxide in methanol (0.80 mL, 0.80 mmol) was added. The solution was stirred under reflux for 3 hr. The solvent was evaporated in vacuo yielding 0.15 g of sodium 6,8-dihydroxyoctanoate as a white powder. Yield was quantitative.
