To a solution of [(S)-1-(5-iodo-1H-benzoimidazol-2-yl)-2-phenyl-ethyl]-carbamic acid tert-butyl ester (1.0 g, 2.16 mmol) in dichloromethane (11 mL) at 0° C. under an atmosphere of nitrogen was added trifluoroacetic acid (6.0 mL, 81 mmol) and the mixture stirred at 0° C. with warming to room temperature over 2 hours. The reaction mixture was concentrated in vacuo then basified with saturated aqueous sodium hydrogen carbonate solution and extracted with ethyl acetate (2×25 mL). The organic extracts were combined, washed with brine, dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated in vacuo to give (S)-1-(5-iodo-1H-benzoimidazol-2-yl)-2-phenyl-ethylamine which was used in the subsequent step without further purification (750 mg, 96%).
