4-Bromo-2-ethylaniline (500 mg, 2.50 mmol) was dissolved in toluene (25 mL), sodium carbonate (397 mg, 3.75 mmol) and benzyl chloroformate (0.428 mL, 3.00 mmol) were added and the mixture stirred under nitrogen at room temperature. After 20 hours water (25 mL) was added, the aqueous phase separated and washed with ethyl acetate (2×25 mL). The combined organic extracts were washed with brine, dried over sodium sulfate and evaporated. Chromatography (40 g silica cartridge, 0-100% ethyl acetate/petroleum benzine 40-60° C.) gave the title compound (I38) (708 mg, 85%) as a pink solid; 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.72 (s, 1H), 7.44-7.28 (m, 7H), 6.43 (s, 1H), 5.20 (s, 2H), 2.54 (q, J=7.6 Hz, 2H), 1.21 (t, J=7.6 Hz, 3H). LCMS Method C: rt 6.46 min; m/z 258.0 [M-PhCH2O+CH3OH]+.
