A mixture of 4′-bromo-5,5-dimethyl-6′,7′-dihydro-5′H-spiro[1,3-dioxane-2,8′-isoquinoline](5.0 g, 16 mmol), 5-chloro-2,3-dihydro-isoindol-1-one (2.7 g, 16 mmol), (+)-(1S,1S)-1,2-diaminocyclohexane (0.576 mL, 4.8 mmol), copper (I) iodide (456 mg, 2.4 mmol) and Cs2CO3 (10.4 g, 32 mmol) in dioxane (80 mL) was heated at 150° C. for 4 hours. After cooling to room temperature, it was diluted with water (50 mL) and extracted with EtOAc (200 mL×2). The combined organic layers were dried over anhy. Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated in vacuo to afford a crude product (5.5 g, 86%) as light yellow solid. MS: 399.1 (M+H+).
