Procedure
A mixture of [(1S)-2-(3,5-dichloro-1-oxido-pyridin-1-ium-4-yl)-1-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)ethyl]5-formylthiophene-2-carboxylate (0.17 g, 0.35 mmol), (8-methyl-8-azabicyclo[3.2.1]octan-3-yl) 2-amino-2-phenyl-acetate (0.14 g, 0.53 mmol) and acetic acid (40 μL, 0.71 mmol) in dichloromethane (8 mL) was stirred at room temperature for 20 h. Sodium triacetoxyborohydride was added and the reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for a further 24 h. The mixture was diluted with dichloromethane (10 mL) and washed with saturated sodium bicarbonate solution (2×10 mL) and saturated sodium chloride solution (10 mL). The organic layer was separated and filtered through a phase separator and the solvent was removed by evaporation under reduced pressure. Purification by preparative HPLC gave the title compound (mixture of diastereoisomers) as a pale yellow solid (72 mg, 28%).
