To a solution of (R)-tert-butyl-2-((2-cyano-3-nitrophenoxy)methyl)piperidine-1-carboxylate (Example 15e, 10.8 g, 29.85 mmol) in ethyl acetate (86 mL) was added 10% Pd/C (1.08 g, 3 mmol). H2 was added by balloon, and the mixture was stirred for 48 hours at room temperature. Upon completion, the mixture was filtered through a pad of celite, and the solvent was removed in vacuo. The residue was recrystallized from ethyl acetate/hexanes to afford (R)-tert-butyl-2-((3-amino-2-cyanophenoxy)methyl)piperidine-1-carboxylate (8.65 g, 88%) as an off white solid. MS 323 (MH+-boc).
