Procedure

A solution of 4-[3-(N,N-dimethylamino)-1-(imidazol-2-yl)propyl]benzoic acid, methyl ester (3.0 g) and hydrazine hydrate (12.5 ml) in ethanol (50 ml) was boiled under reflux for 1 day. Removal of the solvent gave a white solid which was recrystallised from isopropanol-ether to give the title compound, m.p. 168°-170° (2.46 g).
