Procedure

Under an argon atmosphere, 2-[(6,7-dimethoxy-4-quinolyl)oxy]-5-methylbenzaldehyde (105.3 mg) was dissolved in tetrahydrofuran (3 ml) to prepare a solution, and the solution was then cooled to −78° C. A 0.68 M tetrahydrofuran solution (0.6 ml) of isopropylmagnesium bromide was added dropwise thereto, and the mixture was stirred at −78° C. for one hr. A saturated aqueous ammonium chloride solution was added to the reaction solution, and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate layer was then washed with saturated brine and was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was removed therefrom by distillation under the reduced pressure, and the residue was purified by thin layer chromatography using acetone-hexane to give 1-{2-[(6,7-dimethoxy-4-quinolyl)oxy]-5-methylphenyl}-2-methyl-1-propanol (11.5 mg, yield 10%).
