Procedure
50 g of 3-phenylpropylmalonic acid monoethyl ester, 7.5 g of paraformaldehyde, 37.5 ml of pyridine and 2.5 ml of piperidine are stirred together at 50° C. for 5 hours. After cooling, 350 ml of water are added to the reaction mixture, and the mixture is then extracted 3 times with 150 ml of hexane each time. After washing with 1 N hydrochloric acid, water and sodium bicarbonate solution, the organic phase is concentrated and distilled. 5-Phenyl-2-methylenevaleric acid ethyl ester is obtained as a colorless liquid of b.p. 78° to 79° C. under 0.02 mm Hg.
