Procedure
A stirred mixture of 1.47 g. (0.005 mole) of 1-ethyl-1,2-dihydro-4-chloro-7-methyl-2-oxo-1,8-naphthyridine-3-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (Example 30) and 1.72 g. (0.02 mole) of piperazine in 20 ml. of ethanol was heated under reflux for 5 hours. The mixture was filtered and the filtrate was diluted with 100 ml. of water and was extracted with 50 ml. of diethyl ether. The ether layer was dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered and was evaporated in an evaporating dish at room temperature. The residue was recrystallized from heptane to give 0.3 g. of product, m.p. 137°-139° C.
