Procedure

To a mixture of 3.5 g. of 2,2-dimethyl thiazolidine, 50 ml. of benzene and 7.1 g. of dibromoacetyl chloride mixed in ice bath was added 3.1 g. of triethylamine dropwise with stirring and continued cooling. When reaction was complete, the mixture was poured into water and the benzene layer separated, dried over magnesium sulfate and the benzene removed under vacuum. Yield was 8.5 g. of a dark oil.
