6.4 g of 2-benzyl 3-tert-butyl (2S,3S)-5-oxotetrahydrofuran-2,3-dicarboxylate in 80 ml of ethyl acetate was catalytically reduced with 640 mg of a 10% palladium-carbon catalyst at room temperature at atmospheric pressure of hydrogen for 3 hours. The catalyst was filtered off, and the filtrate was evaporated to dryness to give 4.39 g of the title compound as a white solid.
