Procedure

p-Toluene sulfonyl chloride (2.3 g, 12.1 mmol) is added to a solution of TEA (3.5 g, 34.5 mmol) and 1,3-dihydro-2-methyl-3-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2H-isoindol-1-one (2.2 g, 11.5 mmol) in 50 mL of CH2Cl2 at room temperature under argon. The mixture is stirred at room temperature overnight and washed with water (3×50 mL). The organic layer is dried over Na2SO4 and evaporated to give an oil which is chromatographed in ethyl acetate over silica gel to give 1.5 g (38% yield) of 1,3-dihydro-2-methyl-3-(2-tosylethyl)-2H-isoindol-1-one.
