Procedure

A solution of 18 (1 mmol), OsO4 (0.1 mmol) and 4-methylmorpholine N-oxide (2 mmol) in diethyl ether and water are stirred overnight. A solution of NaIO4 is added and the solution further stirred. The aqueous layer is extracted with diethyl ether and the combined organic layer is evaporated under vacuum to yield the crude product, compound 55.
