To a cold (-78° C.) solution of ethyl 4-(diethoxyphosphoryl-3,3-dimethoxypropyl)benzoate (Compound D, 1.4 g, 3.6 mmol), in THF (20 mL) was added n-BuLi (1.6 M solution in hexane, 2.5 mL, 4 mmol). The mixture was stirred for 20 minutes at -78° C. and 10 min. at -10° C. The reaction mixture was recooled to -78° C. and 1(5-methyl-thien-2-yl)3,4-dihydro-4,4-dimethyl-7-naphthaldehyde (Compound G, 650 mg, 2.3 mmol) in THF (4 mL) was added to it. The mixture was stirred for 2 hours at -10° C. and diluted with ether (100 mL), washed with brine (10 mL) dried with MgSO4 and the solvent was removed by distillation to afford a cis and trans (E and Z) isomeric mixture. Purification by chromatography on silica gel of the crude material afforded the title compound as an oil (~ 90% purity).
