Procedure
Over a period of two hours, 600 ml of thionyl chloride are added dropwise, under stirring, to a suspension of 549.4 gm of 3,4-dimethoxy-phenylacetic acid in 600 ml of methylene chloride. After the development of gas has ended (16 hours), the mixture is refluxed for a further hour. Once the highly volatile components have been removed, the residue is distilled in vacuo.
