Procedure
An amount of 28.5 gm (0.106 mol) of 1-(8-methoxy-1,3,4,5-tetrahydro-2H-3-benzazepin-2-on-3-yl)-3-chloro-propane is stirred in 350 ml of concentrated nitric acid for 30 minutes at 20° to 25° C. The solution is poured onto ice water, neutralized with potassium carbonate, and extracted twice with methylene chloride. The extract is dried over magnesium sulfate and concentrated by evaporation in vacuo, and the residue is purified over a silica gel column with ethyl acetate as eluant.
