A mixture of 5-methyl-3-methylthio-6-phenyl-1,2,4-triazine (9 g) and N-(2-furoyl)piperazine (10 g) was heated at 150° to 160° C. for 89 hours with stirring. The reaction mixture was dissolved in benzene (300 ml) and subjected to chromatography on silica gel (300 g) using a mixture of benzene and ethyl acetate (3:2) as an eluent. The eluate was concentrated to dryness and the resulting solid was recrystallized from a mixture of chloroform and diisopropyl ether to give crystals of 3-[4-(2-furoyl)-1-piperazinyl]-5-methyl-6-phenyl-1,2,4-triazine (4.20 g), mp 141.5°~142.5° C.
