Reaction Steps

A solution of 5-methyl-3-methylthio-6-phenyl-1,2,4-triazine (7 g) and hydrazine hydrate (5 ml) in ethanol (15 ml) was heated under reflux for 8 hours. The reaction mixture was evaporated and the resultant residue was washed with water, dried and recrystallized from a mixture of ethanol and water (5:3) to give crystals of 3-hydrazino-5-methyl-6-phenyl-1,2,4-triazine (3.76 g), m.p. 136.5°~137.5° C.
